Last checked: August 18, 2026 · Research and review: GoodOff Team
The best Anki alternative depends on why you want to leave. Choose GoodOff when card creation from your own sources is the bottleneck; Quizlet when shared sets and fast onboarding matter most; RemNote when notes and flashcards should live together; Mochi when Markdown and offline-first study fit your workflow; Brainscape when confidence-based review appeals to you; or Memrise when your goal is specifically language learning.
Anki remains a strong choice for advanced control, add-ons, offline study, and a mature community. Switching is worthwhile only when another workflow solves a problem you actually have.
How we compared these Anki alternatives
This is a research-based comparison, not a claim of hands-on testing. We compared current official product documentation, pricing pages, platform support, spaced-repetition approach, import options, offline behavior, and each product’s clearest use case. Prices are public US prices where an official page exposed them and may change.

1. GoodOff — best for turning sources into a connected study workflow
Best for: learners who want flashcards, quizzes, study guides, podcasts, and tutoring generated from the same supported source.
Strengths: GoodOff generates editable flashcards from PDFs, notes, slides, and other supported sources; uses FSRS for review scheduling; and can import or export Anki packages. If a PDF is your starting point, use the PDF-to-flashcards tool for the focused conversion task.
Tradeoff: GoodOff has a smaller shared-content and add-on ecosystem than Anki. AI generation needs a connection, and there is no permanent free plan.
Pricing: Starter begins at $4.99/month. Eligible new accounts may receive a card-required trial; verify eligibility in the app.
Choose it if: reducing manual card creation matters more than deep template or add-on customization. For a direct feature-by-feature decision, see GoodOff vs Anki.
2. Quizlet — best for shared sets and fast onboarding
Best for: students whose class already shares Quizlet sets or who want a large searchable content library.
Strengths: Quizlet supports web, iOS, and Android, offers manual set creation and web text import, and provides familiar study activities. Its official help center describes millions of searchable sets.
Tradeoff: offline studying and advanced activities depend on subscription level. Quizlet documents text export only for sets you created, on the website, without images; it does not document direct Anki package import.
Pricing: a free account is available. The US learner pricing page showed Plus at $35.99/year and Plus Unlimited at $44.99/year when checked.
Choose it if: convenience and an existing shared-set ecosystem matter more than Anki-level scheduling and template control.
3. RemNote — best for linked notes and flashcards
Best for: learners who want notes, concepts, and spaced-repetition cards in one knowledge base.
Strengths: RemNote combines structured notes with built-in spaced repetition. Its official importer accepts Anki .apkg files and can carry review history, although some card features require adjustment.
Tradeoff: imported custom CSS, JavaScript, and certain Anki-specific behaviors do not transfer cleanly. AI features are unavailable offline, and media sync has documented limits.
Pricing: the official page showed Free at $0, Pro at $8/month billed yearly, and Pro with AI at $18/month billed yearly.
Choose it if: the relationship between notes and cards is more important than Anki’s add-on ecosystem.
4. Mochi — best for Markdown and offline-first study
Best for: learners who prefer Markdown, linked notes, and local app workflows.
Strengths: Mochi supports Markdown cards, tags, templates, spaced repetition, desktop and mobile apps, and offline use. Its Anki importer accepts .apkg files and review history.
Tradeoff: the importer strips custom CSS and JavaScript and converts HTML to Markdown, so complex Anki cards may need cleanup. Sync and publishing can depend on the current plan.
Pricing: check Mochi’s current pricing page before deciding; this audit did not find a reliable public official value suitable for publication.
Choose it if: readable Markdown and offline work matter more than a large public deck marketplace.
5. Brainscape — best for confidence-based review
Best for: learners who like rating their confidence after each card.
Strengths: Brainscape’s official explanation describes a 1-to-5 confidence rating that influences when a card returns. Users can create and share their own content on the Basic plan.
Tradeoff: the workflow is less configurable than Anki’s templates, add-ons, and deck options. Confirm import compatibility before moving a complex Anki collection.
Pricing: Basic is free; consult the official pricing page for current Pro billing and content access.
Choose it if: a guided confidence-rating loop is more appealing than configuring a scheduler.
6. Memrise — best for language study
Best for: language learners who want vocabulary, native-speaker video, listening, and speaking practice.
Strengths: Memrise is designed around language courses and currently highlights authentic native-speaker video and AI-assisted speaking practice.
Tradeoff: it is not a general-purpose Anki replacement for medicine, law, engineering, or custom knowledge bases, and it is not positioned as an Anki migration tool.
Pricing: users can start free; check the current product for plan-specific limits and paid features.
Choose it if: your deck is primarily language vocabulary and you want a course-like experience.
Where Anki still wins
Anki remains the better fit when you need detailed templates, add-ons, custom scheduling, local collection control, mature community resources, or a highly configurable offline workflow. Modern Anki includes integrated FSRS as an alternative to its legacy SM-2 scheduler. Desktop Anki and AnkiDroid are free; the official AnkiMobile app was a $24.99 one-time US App Store purchase when checked, and AnkiWeb synchronization is free.
If those strengths describe your workflow, changing apps may add friction without solving a real problem. See the broader best flashcard app guide for a comparison framed around study needs rather than switching away from Anki.
Best choice by user type
- Choose GoodOff for source-to-flashcards generation and connected study formats.
- Choose Quizlet for shared sets, classroom familiarity, and quick setup.
- Choose RemNote for linked notes plus spaced repetition.
- Choose Mochi for Markdown and offline-first cards.
- Choose Brainscape for confidence-rated review.
- Choose Memrise for a language-course workflow.
- Keep Anki for maximum customization, add-ons, offline control, and mature tooling.
Migration and import considerations
Before leaving Anki, export a backup and test a small deck first. .apkg transfers may preserve basic cards and review history, but custom templates, JavaScript, CSS, media, cloze behavior, and scheduler history can differ by destination. Keep the original Anki collection until you have checked cards, media, scheduling, and sync on every device you plan to use.
GoodOff, RemNote, and Mochi document Anki package imports. Quizlet’s official documentation reviewed for this article describes text import rather than direct .apkg migration. Always consult the destination’s current importer documentation before moving a large collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Anki alternative?
RemNote and Quizlet both offer free account options, with limits that differ by product. Mochi can work locally without an account according to its installation documentation. GoodOff does not have a permanent free plan. Compare the limits that affect your workflow rather than assuming every “free” option includes offline, AI, or advanced study features.
Is Anki still worth using in 2026?
Yes. Anki remains especially strong for configurable spaced repetition, add-ons, custom templates, offline study, and local control. Its integrated FSRS support also means it should not be dismissed as using only an older scheduler.
Can I move my Anki review history?
Some destinations document review-history import, but support varies. RemNote and Mochi both document review-history migration from .apkg; each also lists limitations for custom card behavior. Test a small export before committing.
Which alternative is easiest for PDFs?
GoodOff is the clearest fit in this list when the starting task is turning a PDF into editable flashcards and other connected study outputs.
Conclusion
There is no universal Anki replacement. Switch when a different app removes a specific constraint: manual creation, disconnected notes, lack of shared class content, an unsuitable language workflow, or a preference for simpler review. Keep Anki when its control, ecosystem, and offline strengths are the reason your system works.
