If your study plan is “go back through the slides,” you already know how that ends. The night before the exam, every bullet looks familiar. Then a question asks you to explain the idea in your own words, and the page in your head is blank.
That is not because you are bad at the subject. Lecture slides are built for recognition. Flashcards are built for recall. The whole job is to turn lecture slides into flashcards that make you retrieve the idea, not reread the deck.
Here is a method that works whether you do it by hand or let GoodOff draft the first pass from the file.
Why rereading slides feels productive and still fails
Slides are a teaching aid. They are compressed, often incomplete, and designed so a professor can talk over them. When you restudy the same PDF, your brain gets a cheap hit of “I have seen this.” That is recognition. Exams ask for retrieval.
A useful rule: if you can only answer the question while looking at the slide, you do not know it yet. A flashcard forces the opposite. The prompt is a question. The answer is the thing you have to produce.
What to convert (and what to leave alone)
Do not turn every slide into a card. That is how students end up with 400 cards and zero energy. Convert the slides that carry a testable idea.
Definitions and distinctions. “What is X?” and “How is X different from Y?”
Mechanisms and sequences. Cause → effect, step 1 → step 2, pathway, protocol.
Formulas with meaning. Not just the symbols. What each term does, and when the formula applies.
Exceptions and traps. The one case the lecturer warned you not to mix up.
Diagrams you can rebuild. Label the parts from memory, then check the slide.
Skip title slides, agenda slides, “questions?” slides, stock photos, and walls of text you cannot turn into one question. If a slide is only context, keep it in the source. Do not pretend it is a card.
The one-idea card rule
A good card has one job. If the back of the card needs a paragraph, you stuffed three ideas into one prompt.
Weak card:
Front: “Photosynthesis”
Back: the entire slide, copied.
Better cards from the same slide:
Front: “Where do the light-dependent reactions happen?”
Back: “Thylakoid membrane.”
Front: “What is the main output of the Calvin cycle?”
Back: “G3P / carbohydrate.”
If you need the big picture, write a separate “explain” card: “In two sentences, how do the light reactions feed the Calvin cycle?” That is still one task.
A 25-minute workflow for a slide deck
1. Skim for structure (5 minutes). Write the lecture’s skeleton on paper: 4–8 headings. You are mapping the talk, not memorizing bullets.
2. Mark testable slides (5 minutes). Star the slides you would be sad to miss. Leave the rest.
3. Write questions, not copies (10 minutes). For each starred slide, write 1–3 prompts before you write answers. Cover the slide. If you cannot invent a question, the slide was decoration.
4. Immediate recall pass (5 minutes). Close the PDF. Answer the new cards out loud. Flag anything you only “kind of” knew. Those are the cards that matter this week.
How to phrase prompts so they survive exam wording
Copy-paste bullets train you to recognize the professor’s exact sentence. Exam questions will not be that polite. Flip the language.
Instead of “List the three types of…”, try “A patient / problem looks like X. Which type is it, and why?”
Instead of “What is the definition of osmosis?”, try “Water moves toward which side of the membrane, and what is driving that?”
Instead of “Name the stages,” try “What happens between stage 2 and stage 3 that you cannot skip?”
Keep the answer short enough to grade yourself in two seconds. If you need a diagram, describe the minimum you must redraw.
PDF, PowerPoint, and messy professor decks
Real lecture files are ugly. Images over text. Screenshots. Two-column slides. A 90-slide dump from three class meetings.
Do this:
Work from the PDF or PPT you actually got, not a rewrite in a new notebook.
If a slide is a photo of the board, treat it like handwritten notes: one question per readable idea.
If the deck is huge, convert one lecture sitting, not the whole module in one night.
Keep a “source pointer” on hard cards: “Lecture 4, slide 17.” When a card feels wrong later, you can check the original in seconds.
The faster path: generate the first draft, then edit
Manual cards teach you the material while you write them. They also eat evenings. A sane hybrid is: generate a first pass from the file, then delete, split, and rewrite.

How many cards is enough?
For a typical 40–60 slide lecture, most students need 15–40 cards, not 60. If you are over 50, you are probably cloning bullets.
A quick audit after you finish:
Can you answer each card without opening the PDF?
Does any card have more than one independent fact on the back?
Did you write at least one “explain this” card for the lecture’s main argument?
If those three pass, you turned the lecture into a study system. If they fail, cut cards before you add more.
Review them like an exam, not a reread
Making the cards is half the work. The other half is retrieval on a schedule. Answer from memory. Grade yourself honestly. Put weak cards back tomorrow. Do not reshuffle the whole deck every night “just in case.”
